Higher Apprentice Substation Engineer (London and the South East)

About you and the role

The Substation Engineer programme will ensure you understand that delivering energy across the nation takes epic feats of engineering. You will learn whilst you earn, training at our world-class training centre and in our substations - we will show you how National Grid does it. You will train to become a specialist, looking after our electricity transmission system; ultimately helping us keep the lights on across England and Wales.

Commissioning requires a reasoned and considered approach which builds from individual component tests through to full system commissioning which means you will have the opportunity to make the equipment live and monitor equipment integrity when it is first ‘turned on.’ Our engineers are tasked with providing technical support to others about operational procedures and compliance as well as diagnosing problems and rectifying faults.

What you'll need

To be considered for this role you'll need to have enthusiasm and a willingness to learn, be passionate about tackling climate change along with a curious, questioning mind.

You'll also need:

GCSE Maths, English Language and a Science GCSE at a 4/C and above  

In addition to the GCSE requirements, you will also need to have one of the following sets of qualifications

2 A-Levels - 1 must be in either Maths or Physics (Grade C or above) 

BTEC National Certificate Level 3 in Electrical & Electronic Engineering or Engineering (Merit or Distinction with the Maths modules being Merit or Distinction) 

BTEC National Diploma Level 3 in Electrical & Electronic Engineering or Engineering (Merit or Distinction with the Maths modules being Merit or Distinction) 

ONC in Electrical & Electronic Engineering (Merit or Distinction with the Maths modules being Merit or Distinction)

HNC/HND in Electrical, Electronic or Mechanical Engineering (Pass, Merit or Distinction) 

Degree in Maths, Physics, Chemistry or Engineering

You must hold a valid full UK car driving licence, or be willing to learn to drive and agree to secure a valid full UK car driving licence within 3months after joining the programme.

About you and the role

As a Substation Craftsperson, you will carry out maintenance, repair, and monitoring of high voltage substation equipment, under the guidance of a specified team. Ensuring that National Grid can meet its requirements for safety, efficiency and dependability is vital to this role. The role exists within an industry with a high level of safety-critical activities, so there is a requirement for a disciplined and considered approach to work. You will learn to carry out risk assessments, diagnose faults, and make repairs, using electrical theories and your technical knowledge to maintain the integrity of the network. This role is physically demanding so you will need a good level of physical fitness in order to access positions at height and you must be happy to work outside in all weathers.

What you'll need
To apply for this role, you’ll need to have achieved 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above/4-9including English Language, Maths andScience.You will also need to hold a valid full UK car driving licence or be willing to learn to drive and agreeto secure a valid full UK car driving licence within 12 months of joining the programme.

Aircraft Maintenance Apprenticeship

You’ll work alongside, and learn from some incredibly talented engineers. Every day, you’ll develop your skills on real aircraft, in a real job. Over a series of placements, you’ll work on all our aircraft fleets, gaining the experience and knowhow to help keep them in perfect working order. You’re going to be busy. Alongside comprehensive on-the-job training, you’ll be studying towards the qualifications you need to become one of our future Aircraft Maintenance Technicians.

The initial induction to the business for this Apprenticeship will take place at our London Heathrow base. For the remainder of the first year, you may be based off-site and living away from home which is where you will train and study towards your CAA Part-66 A Licence Modules, as well as a Level 2 Diploma in Aerospace and Aviation Engineering, City and Guilds 4605-2.

For years two and three, you will return to our Heathrow Base to work alongside our engineers with the potential to be placed in one of our UK operational bases. You’ll continue to study towards achieving a Level 3 Engineering Technician apprenticeship (Aircraft Maintenance Fitter/Technician - Fixed and Rotary Wing); and by completing a Level 3 Diploma in Aviation Maintenance (Development Competence).

We are looking for an assistant to support our fundraising and communication team with raising money, awareness and marketing our events. This opportunity is ideal for someone who likes to meet new people and who would like some experience of social media, marketing, and fundraising events. Due to COVID-19 some of our events have been cancelled but you will help planning online events and those that are scheduled to take part later in the year.
